Enosh smiled a bittersweet smile. He clenched Seth’s hand,
trying to hold on to the life of the one he loved and knowing he could not.
Seth held his son’s hand, but the strength in him was slowly failing. Enosh sat
in silent thought while Seth spoke to the others in the room, impressing on
them the importance of obedience to the ways of their God. Enosh tried to focus
on the words his father spoke, wanting to keep them with him as an internal
monument to his father and grandfather, but the sorrow flooding his mind
threatened to build thoughts of self-pity and anger in place of the memorial.
Reaching back into the depths of his mind he recalled the firm teachings he
father imparted to him when he was younger, “You must control your emotions so
you do not fall into the same sin as your uncle Cain.” The remembered warning
helped him recompose his feelings and focus his mind.
Seth looked toward the two men who sat in the chairs. One of
them had tight curls in his grey hair that never relaxed with age and feisty
blue eyes. The other’s grey hair was so straight, and his matching grey eyes so
solemn no one would suspect the two were brothers. “My dear brothers, Amos…
Endor, I am thankful that, although I am about to pass from this life, you are
able to be here with me... I do not think it is a coincidence this happened on
the day after our annual meeting. I believe you were meant to be here so I
might be comforted by your presence.”
